Anglais.
Dear Mr. Wysham:
I am a returned Peace Corps Antrac Volunteer who spent two and a half years in
Northern Togo (Timbou and Dapaon) between May 1983 and November 1985. Like most
volunteers, I have wonderful memories of Togo. I learned a great deal and
remain extremely grateful for the opportunity Peace Corps provided me.
Along with good memories, I also remember numerous instances of police brutality
and the chilling sound of screams coming from the Dapaon police station at
night. Eyadema's was a regime of fear long before the mass killings of the
early 1990s.
Increasingly, Togo seems poised to join its neighbors in bloody
anarchy. If Eyadema succeeds in rigging yet another election, and the economy
continues to deteriorate, we may be looking at another Sierra Leone or Liberia.
Please do what you can to ensure a fair and democratic election.
(Although with Olympio's exclusion this looks impossible.) Please use the power of the United
States to ensure that Eyadema's corrupt and brutal regime ends without a descent
into chaos.
Sincerely,
John McCann |
